Seven Color TeaPatakuri · 2 July 2024
If you've ever been to Sreemangal, or even scrolled past a photo of it, you've probably seen the seven-color tea. One glass, seven neat layers, each a different shade. People travel from all over the country, and from abroad, just to drink one.
But here's the thing. Ask most people how it's made, or who came up with it, and they can't tell you. Especially people my age. We grew up with it, yet the story behind it was slipping away.
So I went to the source. I sat down with Romesh Ram Gour, the man who made the very first seven-layer tea, and we filmed his story together: where he started, how the idea came to him, and how the layers actually stay apart in the glass.
“Seven-layer tea is popular in Bangladesh and all over the world, but the younger generation doesn't really know the secret behind it. So I made this video with its first creator, Romesh Ram Gour, telling his life story and how the seven-layer tea was invented.”
Romesh has been making his layered tea for 24 years. In that time, plenty of people have asked him about his method. But nobody young from Sreemangal had ever sat down to record his story properly. That's what made this one special for both of us.
The documentary went out on YouTube and Facebook, and Patakuri covered it soon after. What meant the most to me, though, was what Romesh said himself.
“For taking on this unusual project, and for carrying my remarkable discovery to the younger generation through video, I give Al Ikram Noyon my heartfelt thanks and gratitude.”
Next time you hold a glass of seven-color tea, you'll know there's a real person and 24 years of work behind every layer.
